Volunteers play a huge part in Café Milk. Every session is supported by trained Peer Supporters, who are mothers with experience of breastfeeding who are able to support other local mothers.
If you have breastfed, you probably know that breastfeeding isn’t always easy and new mothers often need lots of support, which is why other women who have “been there, got the T-shirt” can be really helpful. They know what it’s like to struggle with caring for and feeding a new baby. This is where breastfeeding peer support fits in; it’s mother-to-mother support.
Breastfeeding Peer Supporters are a vital part of the Café Milk team because they can spend time getting to know mothers, introducing them to other people at the café and giving them support and encouragement.
All of our Peer Supporters take part in a dedicated training course that covers breastfeeding basics, active listening and staying safe in the peer support role. The course is fun, although sometimes it can be challenging, and you will be part of a group of women all learning together. The training course will only be the start of your learning. We run regular update sessions and also provide support at Café Milk to help you get settled into your new role.
